What is Path to the Plate?

Path to the Plate is a research-based education program that helps consumers understand how their food choices impact their health.

  • It helps consumers understand how their food choices impact their well-being by making the connection between agriculture and health.
  • By understanding more about the path their food takes to their plate - how it’s grown and produced - consumers can make better food choices for themselves and their families.
  • Using research-based information, Path to the Plate aims to dispel popular myths and misconceptions about food production practices.
  • This material was funded by USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Safety

And Increased Production

The United States has the most safe and stable food supply in the world.

Strict laws and regulations place restrictions on usage of hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides within our food supply.

Production agriculture practices and technologies such as the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which have been deemed no more or less risky than conventional crop production, has allowed American farmers to produce more food on less acres in more environmentally sound ways.

Health

Our health is largely dependent on what we eat.

Disease

In Texas, the leading causes of death are chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and chronic liver disease.

Choices

Seven of the top 10 causes of death can be directly linked to lifestyle choices, and at least five of those diseases can be reduced through better food choices.

Reduction

When health correlates to healthy food, then health is directly tied to agriculture. If a person is consuming safe, healthy foods, their risks for developing disease are reduced.

Misinformation

Myths and misinformation about food production and its effect on our health is emerging ever-quickly through social media and other sources. This misinformation leads to misunderstanding of our agriculture systems and the positive connection these systems have to our health.
